BRONX, N.Y. - More than a year after officials say a toddler playing with a stove started a deadly fire in a Prospect Avenue building, it remains shuttered - a reminder of the tragedy that claimed the lives of 13 people.

Now, some neighbors are outraged to learn that the boy's mother is accusing a roster of defendants of negligence, seeking more than one billion dollars in punitive damages.

"Her kid was the one that started the fire and she ran out the house with the kid and left the door wide open and everybody else suffered, they deserve the money," said one resident.

Fire investigators say Rita Yeboah failed to close the door to her burning apartment back in December 2017, after escaping with her two children, which allowed the flames to spread and turned the building into an inferno. Her lawsuit now targets the manufacturers of the stove, including General Electric for "carelessness and negligence in designing a stove and "knobs" and "valves" that were too easy to turn on," and for "failing to ensure that children couldn't turn on the knobs and valves."

The family's suit also accuses the maker of the steel doors of carelessness because the doors didn't self-close. Con Edison and the city are also named as a defendants for, among other things, failing to make sure the building's fire escapes were properly maintained.

The Yeboahs say, as a result, they suffered smoke inhalation, emotional trauma and loss of property.

"Has her lawyer stopped and asked her what is her responsibility in all this?" asked one resident.

The fire victims ranged in age from 58 years to just 7 months old. Some say the lawsuit is offensive.

"The other people should be making a claim against her and unfortunately she probably doesn't have any money so they go after the deep pockets, the Con Edison, the maker of the doors, these other companies and we as citizens all pay for those lawsuits," said one resident.

NY1 has reached out to Yeboah's attorney for comment.
