With warmer weather on the horizon, the city is hoping to prevent a spike in crashes.

As part of the Vision Zero strategy, the Department of Transportation, along with the NYPD, rolled out a new safety campaign Thursday to warn drivers about the correlation between warmer temperatures and a surge in traffic injuries.

The city says there's an 88 percent increase in serious motorcycle crashes.

"Those aren't just numbers we're talking about, that's our family, our friends, our colleagues, our coworkers, our neighbors, our fellow New Yorkers," said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

"We've dedicated additional enforcement resources citywide with a focus on all hazardous moving violations, and in particular, reckless behaviors that pose a danger to our motorists, pedestrians and our bicyclists out there," said NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan.

Last year, on the first warm day of the season, the city says four people lost their lives and more than 200 were hurt in crashes.

As temperatures reach into the 70s this weekend, the NYPD says it plans to have extra enforcement.
