MAIDEN, N.C. -- Tensions were high Thursday as the family of 17-year-old Shane Cauthen arrived at the home where he was killed Wednesday night.

Spectrum News crews were onscene when the older brother of the man who shot Cauthen met the family at the top of the driveway with a rifle in his hand. The man got into a heated exchange with Cauthen's stepfather in the street, and warned him several times to get away from the property.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, Cuathen was killed after showing up at the property in a mask and shooting at the house several times on Wednesday night.

From inside the home, an unidentified shooter returned fire, striking Cauthen four times, killing him.

No one was hurt in the exchange on Thursday, but authorities were called to the scene.

It is unclear if either party will face charges following the altercation.
