The first major coastal storm of the season is impacting the tri-state area with heavy rain, wind, and coastal flooding.

What You Need To Know

  • A nor'easter develops offshore on Saturday

  • Heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding are likely through Saturday

  • Rain could change to wet snow north of NYC as cold air works in

Low pressure is strengthening as it comes up the East Coast today. As it does so, heavy rain will continue through the area.

While nor'easters often bring significant snow to the region, with cold air lacking, this is a rain event for the city.

The brunt of the storm falls today. A steady, soaking rain continues this morning into the afternoon, then gradually tapers off this evening.

Strong winds with gusts to 50 mph are possible as the low pressure passes just offshore from Long Island. Be sure to secure any loose decorations you may have outdoors.

Coastal flooding will also be a concern for residents along the Long Island shoreline. Minor beach erosion is possible, mainly in Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

As the storm pulls into New England, enough cold air could work its way south, providing a period of snow on the backside north and west of the city. If this were to occur, any accumulations would likely be confined to areas to our north and west.

For now, here is what we can expect for the city on Saturday.
