In this Travel With Val report, Time Warner Cable News’ Valarie D’Elia checks out a country a country-style family getaway with New York connections.

When you think of an idyllic summer vacation not far from New York City, you just might picture something a lot like the Catskill Mountains Resort.

Recapturing the simplicity of a childhood spent in the Catskills, a former firefighter from Queens opened a resort that he hopes will bring old-fashioned values to a new generation.

"Years ago, being a kid, our parents used to take us to different places and stuff up here and you just don’t see that anymore,” William Zaccari said. “You don’t see kids and families actually coming together, sitting by the pool or sitting by a fire pit at night and doing s’mores."

Zaccari is the owner of the Catskill Mountains Resort in Sullivan County, not far from the Delaware River.

His substantial spread includes a main house with rooms designed for couples and a courtyard annex for families.

A restaurant on premises employs both a French chef and maitre d’ from the Big Apple.

For a flat $735 for a family of four, a two-night package includes all meals, a river rafting trip on the Delaware and an ATV ride on nearby trails.

A two-night stay for couples with the same perks is $495 total. Liquor, taxes and tips are extra.
