Staten Island FerryHawks pitching coach Nelson Figueroa hadn’t pitched in a professional baseball game since 2014 prior to Tuesday.

That changed when the FerryHawks had an unexpected doubleheader — a makeup game from May 14 was added to the schedule — and needed a pitcher. Figueroa filled in and struck out the second batter he faced.

The 48-year-old righty threw a 119-pitch, seven-inning complete game Tuesday afternoon, allowing eight earned runs and fanning four in a 10-5 loss to the Gastonia Honey Hunters. He also got three at-bats, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

“Was out of necessity and I wanted to just save our bullpen for the second game,” Figueroa told NY1 Monday night. “Wish I could have kept it closer. But was definitely fun to compete again!”

Figueroa pitched for the New York Mets in 2008 and 2009, going 6-11 with a 4.28 ERA in 32 games (16 starts). His last MLB appearance came on May 9, 2011 as a member of the Houston Astros.

The Brooklyn native also spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates in his nine-season MLB career.

Figueroa, who currently co-hosts a Mets podcast called Amazin’ But True for the New York Post, was named the Riverhawaks pitching coach on March 2.

“Nelson has been a dedicated member of the organization since day one and when some pitchers went down, he was right there to step up and fill the role!” Gary Perone, Vice President and General Manager of the FerryHawks, told NY1 Monday night. “We thank him for his dedication to the organization, 48 never looked so good!”
