Just a few weeks in at Chelsea Piers Hockey Camp, it’s safe to say one little guy is definitely the camp comedian.

When asked how old he was, Markiian Miroshnychenko sarcastically answered “60,” with a laugh.

“Markiian is so much fun,” said Russ Torrisi, his coach at Chelsea Piers Junior Hockey Camp.

What You Need To Know

  • Markiian Miroshnychenko is attending Chelsea Piers Junior Hockey camp

  • He is able to take part thanks to a scholarship from the nonprofit organization Project Rousseau

  • Markiian and his mother Yana headed to the United States after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February

  • Yana also came to the United States pregnant and had her son Severyn at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Miroshnychenko is all of 5 years old. Based on his jokes and hockey skills, you would never know the journey he’s been through to get to this point.

In February, he and his then-pregnant mother Yana fled the war in Ukraine.

Yana, a former news anchor, describes leaving her home when Russian troops invaded Ukraine near their home in the Kyiv region.

“We heard many explosions and military helicopters,” Yana Miroshnychenko said.

They made their way to the Romanian border, then to Italy before reaching Brooklyn to live with her best friend. She had a baby boy, Severyn, at Lenox Hill Hospital.

“He is so calm,” Yana Miroshnychenko said.

Though the boys are safe and sound she got nervous when she read the news of the missile strike near Odessa at the beginning of July where her parents live.

“Thank God they are still alive and they are healthy,” Yana Miroshnychenko said.

She also misses her husband, who is volunteering to help people leave the country. They video call whenever they can.

“It’s so hard for me, but I will try hard to be brave for my children,” Yana Miroshnychenko said.

All she wants is her family to be reunited, soon

Until then, Markiian Miroshnychenko is pleasantly distracted by hockey and his little brother.

His mother is very thankful Markiian was connected to a hockey camp through the nonprofit Project Rousseau, an organization in Manhattan that helps children in extremely challenging circumstances.

“We’re so thankful for Chelsea Piers giving him a scholarship so he can do the things that boys his age always do,” said Andrew Heinrich, Project Rousseau Founder & Executive Director.
