Neighbors and loved ones were shocked and devastated after 20-year-old Azsia Johnson was shot and killed on the Upper East Side Wednesday night.

“This is what happened to my daughter,” said Lisa Desort, Johnson’s mother. “My daughter, all she wanted to do was have a daddy for her daughter. She was abused when she was pregnant.”

Desort spoke before a heartbroken community Thursday night, condemning the NYPD for not stepping in sooner to save her daughter’s life.

“I told them he’s threatening my daughter’s life and they didn’t believe me and now my daughter’s dead,” said Desort.

A vigil was held for Johnson on 95th Street and Lexington Avenue Thursday night. Police say the young mother was shot in the head while pushing a baby stroller with her 3-month-old daughter inside. The baby girl was not hurt, but the mother died at the hospital.

“That bullet could’ve struck any innocent person on this block and that is something that we are alarmed about,” said Mayor Eric Adams, who blamed this latest act of violence on the proliferation of illegal guns on our streets.

“We really need all of our city to unite and send a strong message that we don’t want to wake up to gunshots, we don’t want to see gunshots on our streets, we don’t want to lose innocent families and children,” said Adams.

Sources tell NY1 that Johnson had a history of three prior domestic incidents. Members of the anti-domestic violence organization “We All Really Matter” — or WARM — pleading with victims of domestic violence to seek help before it’s too late.

“Get out,” said Stephanie McGraw, the founder of WARM. “She didn’t get out but you can get out. Domestic violence is a crime. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

No arrests have been made and the suspect’s identity has not been released. Police say he was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black sweatpants. Anyone with information is asked to call crime stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
