A 25-year-old man died at Rikers Island Saturday evening, the Department of Correction said in a news release.

The death is the fourth of a Rikers inmate in 2022.

Dashawn Carter arrived at the jail on Thursday as he awaited trial on charges of third-degree burglary and first-degree robbery. He was pronounced dead on the island at 5:08 p.m. Saturday. His next court date was slated for May 18, according to the correction department website.

"His loss highlights the additional difficulties, burdens and hurdles those like him, and there are so many others, face and have to overcome above and beyond the toll of incarceration," Carter's attorney, Kevin Sylvan, said in a statement.

The cause of death is still being investigated by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The state attorney general’s office and the state’s Department of Investigation will also investigate Carter’s death.

“Any death in custody is a tragic event and an impactful loss,” Correction Commissioner Louis Molina said in a statement. “We are truly heartbroken for this person’s family and loved ones and we wish to express our deepest condolences.”

Molina’s tenure since Jan. 1 has seen four deaths of inmates in the department's custordy, including two in a 24-hour period in March. On Feb. 27, 38-year-old Tarz Youngblood was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he died. On March 17, 49-year-old George Pagan was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The next day, 52-year-old Herman Diaz died on the island.

Last year, 16 inmates from the jail died.

On April 26, a federal judge ordered the city and the federal monitor overseeing Rikers to develop a new plan to overhaul the jail complex in three weeks. Prosecutors asked for the jail to be placed under federal authority.
