Police are searching for the man behind an arson attack Sunday that left two injured and set ablaze Rash, a Bushwick bar frequented by LGBTQ New Yorkers.

On Wednesday, the NYPD released security camera footage from inside the bar showing an individual pouring liquid from a gas canister onto the floor and lighting it, triggering a burst of flame that consumes the room in seconds.

NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig identified the suspect as an Asian man at the department’s monthly crime statistics briefing Wednesday. Essig showed footage of the alleged arsonist purchasing a red gas cannister inside an Exxon station before filling it up outside.

Mayor Eric Adams condemned the attack Tuesday night.

“While this incident is still being investigated, make no mistake: anyone who comes into my city looking to spread fear and hatred will pay the consequences,” Adams tweeted.

The arson is not being considered a hate crime yet, but Essig said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the NYPD’s hate crimes task force are assisting in the investigation.

The owners of the bar, Claire Bendinger and Jake Sillen, said Tuesday the bar will stay closed for the foreseeable future. They launched a GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills, employee’s salaries, and for the eventual repairs.

The NYPD is asking that anyone with information regarding the attack call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477.)
