The NYPD announced the arrest of a 16-year-old male Saturday in connection with a hate crime attack Friday night on a Jewish man in Williamsburg. Five other suspects are being sought in connection to the beating.

The 21-year-old victim was wearing traditional Hasidic clothing, police said, when he was attacked on Gerry Street by a group of assailants a little before 8 p.m. The attack was unprovoked and without words exchanged in the lead, according to investigators.

Footage released by police show the group punching and kicking a man into a parked vehicle and then onto the ground.

The teen arrested Saturday was charged with hate crime assault and gang assault.

Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted her response to the crime, condemning the attack and offering support from New York State Police's hate crimes task force

"I'm outraged by this act of violence against a Jewish New Yorker. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us," Hochul said.

Between January 1 and March 27 of this year, there were 81 hate crimes targeting Jewish people, according to NYPD statistics. During the same period last year, there were 20.

“Nobody ever should be attacked for the way that they look, for who they love for their religion that they practice.. it’s just reprehensible,” said Tara Proust, a Brooklyn resident walking nearby the scene of the attack.

Police are urging anyone with information about the attack or the suspects to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $3,500.
