There is new information on a series of mailed bomb threats that have circulated around the city and the nation.

Officials with knowledge of the investigation tell NY1 that 40 New York area businesses were sent bomb threats by email, which the NYPD has determined were not credible.

NY1 is told by police officials that hundreds of companies, schools, hospitals and other facilities, across the country received the email extortion threat.

An example of the email that was sent out demands $20,000 via the online currency Bitcoin by the end of the day or order to stop the alleged threat.

The NYPD tells us they responded to each of those calls and that the department's Intelligence Bureau is investigating along with the FBI, which is leading the investigation into these threats across the country.

The FBI says, "We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety."
