NEW YORK -- Political Anchor Errol Louis moderates a debate on NY1 with two candidates running for the 32nd City Council District in Queens, one of the most competitive council races on the ballot.

The district in southeast Queens and the Rockaway peninsula includes Howard Beach, Richmond Hill, Belle Harbor and Rockaway Beach.

The seat is currently held by Republican Eric Ulrich, who has represented the district since 2009 and is term-limited.

The candidates in the debate are:

  • Democrat Felicia Singh
  • Republican Joann Ariola

Among the topics the candidates discussed:

  • Why they have opposing views of COVID-19 vaccine mandates
  • If they would support homeowners in flood-prone areas getting government assistance to rebuild their homes when they are damaged, or if they would support a government program to buy out flood-prone residents in certain neighborhoods or streets
  • If they back having police officers respond to mental health crises
  • Their opinions of the plan to close Rikers Island and replace it with community-based jails
