Five states held primary elections Tuesday. Voters in Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington went to the polls to vote in an array of races that will set up key showdowns in November's general election and potentially decide the makeup of Congress.

All eyes were on a key Senate primary in Kansas, with voters in Kansas selecting candidates to replace retiring Senator Pat Roberts. Republicans and Democrats waited to see who would emerge victirous between Convervative firebrand Kris Kobach, the former Kansas Secretary of State, and Rep. Roger Marshall, reportedly the Republican establishment’s preferred candidate.

Here is a recap of some of the key races by state:

Arizona

Republican Sen. Martha McSally and ex-astronaut Mark Kelly, running as a Democrat, secured their parties' nominations Tuesday in the Arizona race to finish the late John McCain's U.S. Senate term.

It sets up a heated contest between two former combat pilots in what is expected to be one of the most expensive and spirited Senate races of 2020. The race will test Democrats' growing strength in sprawling Sun Belt suburbs and Republican efforts to blame China for the coronavirus outbreak.

Kansas

Voters selected Rep. Rob Marshall in the Kansas Senate primary over former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Marshall tweeted a video featuring a congratulatory call from President Donald Trump Tuesday night after the race was called.

Marshall will face Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier, a former lifelong moderate Republican who received national attention at the end of 2018 by switching parties. GOP leaders have worried for months about Bollier’s ability so far to raise more in contributions than the top GOP candidates combined.

Elsewhere in Kansas, Rep. Steve Watkins lost his Republican primary Tuesday after being charged with felony election fraud in addition to other crimes.

Michigan

Rashida Tlaib won a challenge for her House seat in Michigan’s primary, in a rematch with the woman she narrowly defeated two years ago.

Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim women in Congress, secured likely re-election to the 13th District in and around Detroit. Her opponent in Tuesday's primary was Detroit City Council President President Brenda Jones, who lost by less than 1,000 votes in 2018 when the primary field was larger. Jones on the same day defeated Tlaib to later fill out the remainder of John Conyers’ term.

Missouri

Cori Bush, a onetime homeless woman who led protests following a white police officer's fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, ousted longtime Rep. William Lacy Clay Tuesday in Missouri's Democratic primary, ending a political dynasty that has spanned more than a half-century.

Clay’s family occupied the seat, which includes St. Louis, since 1969, with his father serving the district from 1969-2001.

Washington

Washington employs a “top two” primary format, meaning races might not come down to Republican vs. Democrat. Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, is seeking to become the state’s first third-term governor since 1972, but faced a record 35 challengers.

Inslee, who led decisively in early returns, will face a small-town police chief in the fall. Loren Culp, who finished a distant second in the state’s “top two” primary. Culp campaigned against Inslee’s coronavirus restrictions like mandatory masks, saying they infringed on people’s constitutional rights.
