The Republican Party’s big tent is getting pretty small.

With the unfettered anger of an employee telling off his boss as he walks out the door for the final time, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake ripped President Trump in what amounted to a “you can’t primary me, I quit” speech.

“Reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior has become excused and countenanced as telling it like it is --  when it is actually just reckless, outrageous and undignified,’’ thundered Flake from the Senate floor.

Flake is continuing a political charge first launched by outgoing Republican Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, who suggests that Donald Trump is more fit for “adult day care” than the presidency.

Perhaps illustrating their point, the tweeter-in-chief fired back at them both this morning: “The reason Flake and Corker dropped out of the Senate race is very simple, they had zero chance of being elected. Now act so hurt & wounded!”

But there’s some truth to the president’s latest blast. Will a Republican Senator who’s not a lame duck be brave enough to speak and then face accusations that he or she is quacking up?

Let’s try to put ideology to the side — good luck — and be honest about the temperament of the man fulminating in the Oval Office. At this point, would you even want to buy a watch from Donald Trump, let alone see him run the country?

Like huckster Harold Hill in “The Music Man”, Trump is trying to sell all an invisible band to all of America – but even some of his old supporters are refusing to play along . As the GOP begins to crack under the weight of reckless tweet after reckless tweet, the big question remains how long the rest of the party of Lincoln will look the other way in fear.
