Yazmin Ramos lives by the saying "if you look good, you feel good."

That message is the driving force behind her non-profit Polished Angels.

Ramos brings the salon to those who can't easily get to one. In particular, she’s interested in helping seniors living in nursing homes.

"We need to pamper one another, we love to get pampered,” Yazmin said. “Even myself, when I get my nails done, I love to be able to just relax, let my nail-tech do all the work, and focus on my inner thoughts."

The Bronx native launched the organization seven years ago.

She travels to nursing homes—and one women’s shelter— all over the five boroughs, giving manicures to residents.

And it's about more than the fresh coat of polish.

Ramos says the connections she makes with the seniors are what is most important.

"A lot of these seniors don't get visitors, or they are not able to talk to their family members, sometimes they don't go to visit them, and they are missing that, you know?” Ramos said. “So I do Polished Angels so I can be that special person that they look forward to seeing."

It's a small gesture, but it’s one that resident say has had a huge impact.

"She's making someone else feel good, which is the best you can do,” said Sylvia Porter, a resident of the Isabella Geriatric Center. “I get such a kick talking to her, really, because she acts like she knows me and I feel so good talking with her!"

That feeling goes both ways, and it’s what keeps Ramos coming back week after week.

"It's the little things that we need to pay attention to,” Ramos said. “We need to remember the people that are often forgotten. That's why I love interacting with my seniors, my old lady gang, whatever you want to call it, they just mean a lot to me and it's really so special."

So for giving these seniors some added shine, Yazmin Ramos is our New Yorker of the Week.
