Byford has been a globe-trotting transit executive throughout his career, running systems in Sydney, Australia and Toronto, as well as the subway and bus systems as president of MTA New York City Transit.

He quit the MTA just before the start of the pandemic, saying then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo had taken a micromanagement approach and was taking away his key responsibilities.

Byford then ran the Transport for London, most recently overseeing a troubled rail project and completing it. With that project behind him, he returned to New York.

He is already being greeted with fanfare from transit buffs who credit Byford for saving a subway system that was unreliable, slow and mismanaged, and creating a blueprint for its turnaround.
