Amid the nationwide outrage following the release of the video of Tyre Nichols' deadly beating by police, the pain hits close to home for Gwen Carr -- her son, Eric Garner, was killed after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold during his 2014 arrest.

Video of the incident, during which the 43-year-old father of six could be heard gasping "I can't breathe," sparked a similar reaction of widespread fury and calls for law enforcement reform.

In an interview Friday night after video of Nichols' arrest was released, Carr described to Spectrum News' Dean Meminger that "it's so horrifying to watch such a video."

"I couldn't even watch the whole thing," Carr said of the video released Friday. "It's that outrageous, because the parents have got to look at this. And no parent should have to look at their child being beaten to a pulp."

"And by law enforcement, people who are supposed to serve and protect you take your life, that is so appalling," she added.

"it just keeps happening," Carr lamented. "It's appalling, disgraceful and disgusting."

Carr called it "heartbreaking" to see Nichols cry out for his mother in the video, saying it brings back the pain of her son's death.

"It makes me live my story over and over again," Carr said, adding: "It just brings tears to your eyes, just like now, I can hardly compose myself just watching that young man lose his life the way that he did."
