The city's oldest curated market celebrated Mother's Day by highlighting local artists and artisans.

Vendors like Natalize Katz has turned her passion for painting into a family business, drawing inspiration from famous trailblazers.

“Billie Holiday has always been special to me," said Katz. "I even got her lyrics tattooed on my arm because when my mom passed away, I did that to commemorate her.”

Katz's mother was also an artist. She died in 2019, but her impact can still be felt in her daughter’s drawings, which were on display at the Grand Bazaar in Manhattan this Mother’s Day.

“She was a very positive, happy person so I try to commemorate and live through her by looking at the positive things as hard as it is. But I know she wouldn’t have wanted me to stop painting and always be an artist and work hard. I think she would be really proud of me. I’m not gonna cry,” she said.

Grand Bazaar is the city’s oldest curated market, featuring over 130 independent vendors. Among them, Katz and her 11-year-old son Jacob, who is a talented artist in his own right.

“I wanna be like her. I wanna illustrate," said Jacob. "Maybe sell stuff in a booth here. Maybe get my own booth sometime.”

The Hymans are also following in the mother’s fashionable footsteps.

“It’s our special way that we like to bond as a family," said Chloe Hymans. "Doing this together. So, on Mother’s Day, it’s even more special.”

Alexandra and Chloe Hymans have been coming to the Grand Bazaar with their mom Sarah for more than a decade, selling hand-picked vintage pieces.

“Our mother is so fashionable and has been doing this for so long that it makes me as a grown-up appreciate the advice she’s given to us over the years," said Alexandra. "Like she really knows what she’s talking about!”

Their mother said she doesn’t need flowers or jewelry on this Mother’s Day — simply watching her daughters do what they love is a present enough.

“This is the best gift. The best gift to be with them,” said Sarah Hymans.
