BRONX, N.Y. — The New York City Police Department has released surveillance video showing the man suspected of firing a bullet that hit an 11-month-old girl in the Bronx Wednesday night.

The clip shows a gun-wielding man running along a street in Jerome Park.

The child was seated inside her mother’s car on East 198th Street and Valentine Avenue at approximately 6:45 p.m. when a male suspect in pursuit of another male fired a round, authorities say.

The stray bullet hit the child in the cheek, and the mother immediately phoned 911.

Police arrived at the scene within two minutes. EMS rushed the child to St. Barnabas Hospital where the she was intubated, police say.

The infant was then transported to Cornell Medical Center, where she is in critical but stable condition, according to police.

During a press conference in the Bronx near the scene of the crime, Deputy Chief of Department Timothy McCormack denounced the instance of gun violence.

“This is completely unacceptable in our city,” McCormack said.

Approximately an hour later, Mayor Eric Adams, flanked by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, held an emotional press conference in the Bronx, vowing to stay in the streets until the gun violence abates, while calling for help from state lawmakers to impose stricter gun laws.

“This is not the city our children should grow up in, and we need help. We need help from Albany, we need help from our district attorneys, and we need help to make sure we don’t continue to put young people on a pathway of violence,” Adams said. “We’re losing on both ends. Enough is enough.”

Adams described the “flow of guns” into the city as an “assault” and an “abandonment on all levels of government.”

Gibson called the situation “beyond a state of emergency,” adding, “there has to be a transformation from the federal government to the state government on down to the local government.”

“Our babies deserve to live,” Gibson added.

Deputy Chief of Department McCormack later said that the stray bullet traveled through the rear window of the vehicle, struck the child in the face, and exited through the front of the car.

No arrests have been made yet. An investigation remains ongoing.
