BRONX, N.Y.  — As investigators in the Bronx continue to probe a suspected residential gas explosion that killed one person and injured several others Tuesday, the city says several surrounding homes will have to be torn down.

The incident took place just before 11 a.m. at 869 Fox Street in the Longwood section.

Police say the blast killed 77-year-old Maria Dagbasta.

The NYPD says officers were able to get inside the home and moved a couch aside to rescue a woman who was trapped by debris.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"We spoke to her after we brought her out of the house and she was feeling cold from having her clothes torn off by the explosion," said NYPD officer Francisco Beato. "We were happy and glad that she was alive and later on realizing we were lucky. God was looking out for us."

Another woman and five NYPD officers were also hurt.

Mayor Eric Adams says one person reported smelling gas in the area but Con Edison says it didn't get any calls about a gas odor.

The city Department of Buildings says full demolitions have been ordered at 865, 867, 869, and 871 Fox Street due to structural instability.

City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr., who represents the area, says 18 adults and two children have been displaced.

He says the American Red Cross is working with them to provide emergency relocation services.
