In Middle Village, Queens, one of the most poignant moments of an annual candlelight vigil at Juniper Valley Park occurred when hundreds who gathered on the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11 were asked to turn around to focus on the Tribute in Light. It’s the same spot where park goers once had a stunning view of the Twin Towers.

The vigil is organized by the 9/11 Middle Village Candlelight Vigil Committee, a small group that consists of former neighbors who reunite in Middle Village for a solemn but uplifting program that invites and reminds the community to never forget the 113 people from the surrounding area who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

The first vigil at Juniper Valley Park was held the first Sunday after the 2001 attacks. An estimated 6,000 people attended.
