NEW YORK — The New York City Police Department says overall crime in the city is up 22% when you compare May of this year to May of last year.

The department's latest crime stats show shootings increased 73% from 100 incidents last year to 173 this year. That was on top of a 63% increase the previous year. 

According to the latest numbers, robberies are up 47%, grand larcenies are up 36% and felony assaults are up 20%.

The department says 37 murders were reported last month, the same as a year ago. 

Burglary is the only index crime to fall, down nearly 22% from the previous year.
