What You Need To Know
- The Bronx Night Market is located in Fordham Plaza
- It is open from April through November
- Organizers say it has still been a success despite the COVID-19 restrictions
This week, the event is celebrating it’s 4th anniversary. One of the most popular stands is Arepa Baby. It serves up a gluten free version of Venezuelan arepas mixed in with unique ingredients.
“I’m in between this culture and that culture so how can I really stay and honor my culture? With arepas right! That’s what my mom used to cook for me, my aunt, everybody,” said vendor Karelys Garcia.
The culinary market is located in Fordham Plaza, kicking off in the Spring until Late Fall. Every Saturday there are popular dishes and new offerings. Like all public events, the market could not start it’s season like it normally would because of the pandemic.
Organizers say it has still been a success despite the COVID-19 restrictions. Some are about to be lifted.
“We still do contact tracing at the front gate to make sure, but we are no going to have RSVP. We are still going to have the place barricaded but we are going to loosen up a little bit the capacity of how many people can fit inside this space. We are getting easier with the mask mandate,” said co-founder Marco Shalma.
He says they will be pulling out all the stops for the anniversary — with two live bands, and a DJ. As well as more food stands, including one from the iconic Katz's Deli. There will also be giveaways, but here the true price is being able to try food you otherwise may not have even heard of.
“To be here for Bronx Night is very special because we are brining something from Brazil and people take it in so nice. They literally open their hearts for us and its very special. At the same time to work with different people of different cultures is awesome. It’s magic,” said Eliana Perez who co-owns the Mr. Bocadillo stand.
The Bronx Night Market anniversary celebration is June 5 and the market is open every Saturday through November 13.
