The Bronx-native is executive director at the Brooklyn College Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, part of the City University of New York. It's located at Steiner Studios, the film and television production studio complex at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It's the only film school in the nation located on a working film lot.

"There are many disciplines here like cinematography, editing, screenwriting, producing, visual effects and animation,” said Gladstein, who added “this is not teaching you just to be a director, it's teaching you how to be a filmmaker."

Mirta Desir is a directing student, working in post-production on a film called Skater Girls with editing student Jamie Greene. She says Feirstein's location at Steiner was a big plus for her when she was choosing a graduate film program.

"You kind of feel the vibe in the air and the energy, it has the bustle of an actual location for filming rather than a traditional campus,” said Desir.

It's part of what Gladstein calls a dynamic, creative and collaborative environment at Feirstein.

"Everyone brings something to the set - people bring ideas,” said student Alex Podolyanchuk.

Gladstein says while the industry has changed since he got into the business, there is a constant when it comes to filmmaking.

“Nowadays, things are ten episodes or ten minutes, different formats, different lengths, different distribution platforms, but filmmaking is filmmaking and storytelling is storytelling,” Gladstein said, noting that he encourages aspiring filmmakers to learn a bit of the rules, and then go out and break them.
