NEW YORK — The race for mayor is now a little less crowded after City Councilman Carlos Menchaca on Wednesday announced he is dropping out.

He confirmed the end of his campaign on Twitter.

Menchaca represents several Brooklyn neighborhoods on the City Council.

He says he wants to refocus on his City Council duties.

In a statement, Menchaca wrote in part, "My work now continues in the city council where I will be fighting for a fair city budget that will rebuild our communities hit hardest by COVID and help to shape a brighter future for the city I love."

Menchaca was hoping to become the city's first gay Latino mayor.
