The state's new, permanent paid sick leave rules go into effect today.

Governor Cuomo signed pandemic-specific legislation back in March establishing the right to paid sick leave, but that's now here to stay.

Employees can use leave for an illness, to take care of a sick family member or to address safety needs of domestic violence victims.

This applies to places of work with five or more employees or a net income of more than $1 million.

If a workplace does not meet those thresholds, it must provide unpaid sick leave.
