Kendrick Greer's shift at the Fulton Ale House started like any other on Tuesday. But that all changed when the bartender heard gunshots and saw people running.

“I had frightened pedestrians enter my business, trying to get away from what they had witnessed and heard,” said Greer.

Police say a B25 bus was traveling westbound on Fulton Street at the corner of Tompkins Avenue when someone who was not on the bus started firing gunshots just before 3 p.m.

A 70-year-old woman sitting in the back of the bus was struck by a bullet, which grazed her left cheek.

“She was the unintended target," said Deputy Chief Michael Kemper with NYPD's Brooklyn North precinct. "Right now, this case is very active. As you can see, it’s an active crime scene. Detectives are in the process of recovering video, interviewing people."

Police say the shooter was wearing an orange or red jacket with a gray bottom, jeans, and white sneakers.

Union leaders said the bus driver heard the gunshots and drove about a block up to get passengers to safety. They estimate about 30 people were on board.

“He said that he heard, 'pop, pop, pop,' and that he looked in the mirror, he saw a little bit of commotion, he saw everyone in the bus hit the floor and at that point, he decided to get out,” said JP Patafio, VP of Buses Brooklyn for the Transport Workers Union Local 100.

Craig Cipriano, president of MTA Bus Company and senior vice president of buses for MTA New York City Transit, also issued a statement praising the bus driver's actions.

“Nobody should have to go through this on a bus or anywhere else. Thanks to the heroic actions of the bus operator by driving passengers out of the line of fire, and radioing to get help, a serious incident did not turn tragic. Our thoughts are with the victim to whom we wish a speedy recovery and we are fully cooperating with the NYPD investigation.” Cipriano's statement reads.

People NY1 spoke with who heard the gunshots are grateful nobody was killed, but said it was a dangerously close call.

“Oh dear. We need more police in this community, number one. We had 1,000 cops out here this afternoon, but we need somebody out here patrolling this area more,” said Betty Long, who is the manager of Betty's Gospel Den.

Police say the victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

They are asking anyone with information to contact police.
