The FDNY is mourning the death of former fire Commissioner Carlos Rivera.

Rivera was the first Hispanic commissioner in the Department's 127 year history. He was appointed the 27th Commissioner in 1990 and served in that position until his resignation in 1993.

Rivera was a well-respected firefighter and officer who served New York City for 35 years, including leading the Department during the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.

Rivera was 86 years old.
