NEW YORK - Elected city officials rallied with advocates in Manhattan demanding an end to what they say are deceptive tactics by federal immigration officers.

Gathering in Foley Square Saturday afternoon, Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez and Carlos Menchaca, denounced recent tactics by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers.

They say the ICE officers pose and identify themselves as city police officers.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer says the tactics makes New Yorkers unsafe.

"We cannot allow federal agents to patrol our streets and act as police. This makes us unsafe as New Yorkers and believe it, as you know, it erodes trust as it has already been eroded in our city,” said Brewer.

They also demanded the immediate release of Fernando Santos-Martinez who is currently held at a Hudson County ICE facility.

They say on Thursday, ICE officers identified themselves as police officers from the 34th precinct to find and detain Santos-Martinez at his job in Harlem.

NY1 has reached out to ICE and the NYPD for comment but have not heard back.
