A smooth landing at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport on Wednesday for more than 30 dogs flown in by the Berkshire Humane Society.

Executive Director John Perreault, said, "It’s the first time we’ve ever brought a plane into Pittsfield with dogs. We’ve recently been going to Worcester, and we’ve noticed that the plane rides are a lot less stress on the dogs. It’s just four hours.”

They came from a rescue shelter in Alabama and are looking for a good home.

Perreault says they're more equipped to care for them here because they have more space.

“These are dogs that are coming from a shelter that is high volume. They don’t have the benefits that we have in the northeast, where a lot of times, we lack dogs. Especially since Covid, most of the time, most of the dog kennels are empty," Perreault said.

After being unloaded from the plane, the dogs were taken to the old Pittsfield Municipal Animal Shelter to begin quarantine.

Perreault says all the dogs need to be medically cleared by a local vet before they can be adopted.

“They’ll be quarantined here for 48 hours. The general public can’t see them, they can’t be in there, just our quarantine team. They’ll care for them, and we’ll do stool samples and blood works and test everybody again," Perrault said.

He says they've been very busy with adoptions the last few months and anticipates these dogs will find new homes very soon.

Perrault said, “We probably have an application for every dog in there. Because of COVID --one of the good things because of COVID, if there is a good thing -- is that so many people are looking to add a companion into their home, and for many people, now is the time to do it.”
