WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump will host a funeral at the White House for his brother, Robert Trump, on Friday.

Plans for the funeral were first reported by ABC News and later confirmed by CNN, but the president told reporters Monday that his brother would be "greatly honored" by a funeral at the White House.

"He loves our country. He loved our country so much. He was so proud of what we were doing and what we are doing for our country," Trump added.

It is rare for the White House to host a funeral. The last time a deceased body was brought to the White House was for the funeral of President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963.

The last time remains were brought to the White House for the funeral of a private citizen was in 1936, when a funeral was held for Louis Howe, who served as an adviser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Robert Trump passed away Saturday in a New York hospital. Details of his illness were not released.

Born in 1948, he was one of five children born to real estate magnate Fred Trump and his wife Mary Anne MacLeod Trump. Robert served as an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, the company founded by his father.

In a statement following his passing, President Trump called Robert his "best friend" and said "his memory will live on in my heart forever."
