Detective Dalsh Veve, a once vibrant NYPD officer who suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was dragged by a stolen car, made a rare media appearance this week.

It came in the form of a video released by a campaign calling itself “We Are All New York,” featuring Veve alongside his wife as she criticizes what she calls a recent lack of support for the NYPD.

Veve can no longer speak or care for himself after the car dragging, which occurred in Flatbush, Brooklyn, three years ago. The car was driven by Justin Murrell, who was only 15 years old at the time.

"The prognosis was very poor, he's been in a wheelchair since,” Veve’s wife Esther explains in the video. “Our life hasn't been the same."

The campaign consists of law enforcement organizations, police unions and their supporters, who are all in a bitter battle with elected officials over recent police reforms they view as unfair to cops.

"The community unfortunately that my husband and so many officers have chosen to protect has turned against them. Officers are now targeted by just wearing the uniform,” Esther says in the video.

The video attempts to convey in stark terms the sacrifices some officers make on behalf of the city.

"We have been let down by our politicians,” Esther continues. “They disown our officers. They strip them of the respect and ask them to do the impossible."

The campaign says it's telling true and personal stories of police officers.

"Now is the time to show our police officers the support that they need,” Esther adds.

Detective Veve's story is a heartbreaking one.

His family was angered that the teen who was convicted of first degree assault for critically injuring him was released from prison this year. He did less than three years behind bars.

Veve and his wife depend on the emotional and physical support of family members and other officers to help care for the 38-year-old detective.
