Tropical Storm Fay moved through the city around midnight, but it’s left behind some dangerous rip currents and rough surf for beachgoers.

Surfers were out early at Rockaway Beach this morning hoping to take advantage of some of the storm surge, but the winds proved to be unfavorable.

“It’s a little sloppy, a little all over the place but some good size waves out there,” said one surfer.

The rough waters did not keep early beach goers from getting their fill of the ocean. Dozens of swimmers were out early before lifeguard shifts began.

Parks Department employees were patrolling the shoreline with megaphones asking swimmers to return to shore until lifeguards began working. Most beach goers did adhere to the request.

As the afternoon went on, the sun came out and burnt off some of the low lying fog. Swimmers say though the waves are rough the water was very warm.
