QUEENS, N.Y. - A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the neck Monday in Queens.

It happened around 5 p.m. at 166th Street and Marsden Street in Jamaica.

The NYPD says the boy was standing alone on the street when two men came up to him and shot him.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery.

Neighbors say the area is not protected.

"Police don't patrol here. They may come through once in a while, you know, they but don't patrol. They don't patrol and you have the projects. The kids, whatever, come down this block. It's just disheartening. It really is disheartening that we're living like this," said one resident.

This comes after there were 30 shootings Sunday alone and 10 deaths.

Over the entire weekend there were 44 shootings and 63 victims, compared to 16 shootings and 21 victims over the holiday weekend last year.

“We have to zero in, there’s a lot of gang activity, there’s a lot of gun activity, it’s bad people with guns it doesn't get any simpler than that. We get people settling scores, we get people spraying a crowd, we had a bullet going through a young child's bedroom this weekend, but thankfully the young girl wasn't there. The sad part of this is, this was predictable, you heard me say a storm is coming and we’re in the middle of it right now, we’re in a perfect storm of sorts," said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.

"It's not because of one thing let's be really clear. There's not one cause for something like this. There's a lot of different pieces. Again, the fact that the court system is not working, the economy's not working, people have been pent up for months and months. So many issues, underlying this challenge. But to address it, it's not just one answer either, it's gonna take a lot of different pieces," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

As for homicides, from June 28th to July 5th, there were 23.

Last year, there were 16 homicides during the same period.
