QUEENS, N.Y. - The US Open is still expected to take place in Queens this summer, but fans will not be allowed to attend.

It's scheduled to run from August 31st to September 13th.

There would be no qualifying tournament this year.

Instead, a tune-up tournament scheduled for mid-August in Cincinnati would be moved to New York.

The U.S. Tennis Association’s safety measures to protect players and staff include testing, additional cleaning, extra locker room space, and dedicated housing and transportation.

But some of the sport's biggest names have already expressed reservations about playing under the restrictions that would be in place.

We’re excited about the US Open, it’s going to be held in Queens August 31st to September 13th, it will be held without fans but we can watch it on TV and I’ll take that, the tennis authorities are going to be taking extraordinary precautions but that’s going to occur in Queens," said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Professional tennis tours have been suspended since March because of the pandemic.
