NEW YORK - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is putting together a panel of experts to assess ongoing problems with more than 300 subway cars.

The panel will examine recurring issues with the Bombardier R-179 fleet.

The cars have experienced multiple safety and quality issues since 2017.

Earlier this month, an A train became separated between the sixth and seventh cars as it entered Chambers Street.

No one was hurt.

In January, the R-179s were pulled out of service after two incidents, including on where a door opened four inches in the middle of a tunnel.

Hundreds of cars were then inspected and deemed safe for passengers.

All 318 subway cars in the R-179 fleet will be held out of service until the new review is complete.

Bombardier has a $600 million contract with the MTA.
