Mayor de Blasio said hospitals are about 10 days away from widespread shortages of vital medical equipment, including ventilators and hospital masks.

In a CNN interview, de Blasio made an urgent call for the federal government to provide funding and mobilize the military to fight the pandemic.

He claimed the state has received next to nothing from the federal government, saying it feels like states like ours are on their own.

"If we don't get more ventilators in the next 10 days, people will die who don't have to die - it's as simple as that. And the one force that could do that, the federal government, particularly the military is not acting,” said de Blasio.

Mayor de Blasio also called on Congress and President Trump to pass a critical stimulus bill to provide money directly to Americans as well as to the city's hospitals.

He said the outbreak will likely get worse over the next two months.
