NEW YORK - A suspect is in custody in connection with an attack on a transgender woman in the subway after being picked up by police in New Jersey. 

Police say the victim, 26-year-old Serena Daniari, was waiting for a southbound C train at the 155th Street station in Washington Heights.

Police say she was approached by a man a woman when the man made transphobic comments, spat on her and slapped her in the face.

The woman then slapped Daniari's phone out of her hand, according to police.

It's not yet clear which person is in police custody. 

Daniari posted a video on Twitter following the incident.

"I swear I just wish people would leave me alone. I didn't do anything, I just want to be left alone," Daniari said.
 


Mayor de Blasio called the attack “loathsome” and said, "On behalf of your city I’m so sorry this happened. Transgender and non-binary New Yorkers deserve to travel in their city without fear."

Daniari responded to the tweet thanking the mayor for his support of the transgender community.

Now police are searching for the man and woman allegedly behind the attack. According to police, the man is in his twenties was and last seen wearing a yellow jacket. The he was with woman is also in her twenties and was last seen wearing a black jacket and eye glasses, according to police.

At Governor Cuomo’s direction, the state police hate crimes task force will help the NYPD with the ongoing investigation.

Congressman Adriano Espaillat is calling on the MTA to "conduct a full and thorough investigation into the attack."
