The old Yankee Stadium was known as "The House That Ruth Built." Now, a Bronx community group is looking to honor a more recent Yankees legend by renaming the road outside the new stadium for Derek Jeter.

The 161st Street Business Improvement District announced its plan Wednesday morning to rename the street outside the stadium "Jeter Street" after the longtime shortstop.

The City Council would need to pass legislation for the street renaming and the mayor would need to sign it. In a statement in the afternoon, the local council members, Vanessa Gibson and Diana Ayala, said a formal request for the street renaming had not been submitted but they would consider it when it was.

The former captain spent his entire 20-year career with the Bronx Bombers, winning five World Series titles and collecting 3,465 hits, sixth-most all-time.

Jeter is expected to be voted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

In 2014, the corner of River Avenue and 161st Street outside the stadium was renamed "Rivera Avenue" for legendary Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, Jeter's teammate.

Last year, he became the first player ever to be elected unanimously to the Hall of Fame.
