NY1 has learned more than 40 religious leaders are urging City Council Speaker Corey Johnson to push Mayor de Blasio’s proposal for paid time off for New Yorkers.

NY1 exclusively obtained the leaders' letter which argues this is a life-affirming policy that promotes equity and fairness.

Mayor de Blasio has been pushing the proposal all year and was a crucial talking point on his presidential campaign trail.

It would require businesses with more than five employees to provide 10 days of paid time off per year.

Be Blasio spoke about the proposal Sunday, saying that Americans should be entitled to a day of rest.

"I think scripture couldn't be clearer about the meaning of the Sabbath,” de Blasio said. “In fact, one could say that the Sabbath was the world's first labor law protecting working people and giving them a day off … If you are a working person, if you're working all year long, you deserve paid vacation.”

He had said it would get approved in 2019, but recently the bill has stalled in the council after small businesses raised concerns.
