Basketball was the sport Amir Griffin most liked to play, and it’s the way a group of fellow high school athletes are honoring him.

The 14 year old was hit by a stray bullet and killed while he was shooting hoops outside on a basketball court in Jamaica in October.

On Saturday, a basketball tournament in Jamaica honored the slain teen.

“He was in a park that he normally goes to every day, doing what he loved. It was supposed to be safe for him and it wasn't," said Kyrk Peponakis, a basketball coach and the tribute organizer.

Griffin was a freshman at Benjamin Cardozo High School. He was set to join the basketball team there. At his young age, he had already earned the admiration of his peers.

"Thinking about playing hard for him. Going out there and playing as a team and not selfish," said 13-year-old Damion Edwards, who participated in the event.

Griffin's mother, aunt and other family members, watched from the front row. The event raised funds to help them get through this tough time.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” said Akiba Griffin, Amir’s aunt. “I say that because we know he loved the sport so much. So, it’s like we feel good knowing that we get to be a part of something that he really, really loved. But it also hurts knowing that he’ll never be able to play again.”

Amir tragically never got to wear his Cardozo jersey on the court, but his family is getting it as a gift.

Though his NBA dreams were cut short in a senseless act of violence, the thought of what could have been, inspires many here.

"He was an aggressive player. If wanted to get it, he got it. He was really into the game of basketball,” said Jayden Samuel, another child who participated in the event.
