People caught driving along the 14th Street Busway in Manhattan are now subject to fines.

Fines started going into effect Monday after a 60-day grace period.

FINES FOR VIOLATING 14TH STREET BUSWAY RULES

First offense: $50

Repeat offenses: Fines increase $50 for each violation in a 12-month period, up to $250 total

NYPD traffic agents and street cameras are enforcing the restrictions, and soon, bus-mounted surveillance cameras will also help catch violators.

The busway mostly restricts 14th Street traffic to buses. The 18-month pilot project allows only buses and trucks on 14th Street between Third and Ninth Avenues in an effort to speed up bus commutes and ease congestion.

Under busway rules, cars can only make pick-ups and drop offs on 14th Street from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and they are required to make a right at the next intersection and are not allowed to make left turns.

Exceptions are made for cars using a parking garage, but they must leave 14th Street at the next available right turn.
