The city is putting in place a program that will provide support for people who will benefit from an upcoming bail reform law.

Starting January 1, 2020, a new law will eliminate bail for a variety of misdemeanor and felony charges.

The Atlas program, formed by Mayor de Blasio's Office of Criminal Justice, aims to ensure that those defendants stay out of trouble while awaiting trial and hearings.

It will offer free housing assistance, mentoring services, job training and more.

The bail reform law is retroactive, which means some current inmates could be eligible for release starting mid-December.

Roughly 900 people could be released as a result.
