NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O'Neill are introducing a new program to offer more mental health resources to officers.

The program "Finest Care" comes after 10 members of service took their own lives this year.

It offers free counseling and prescriptions through a partnership with New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

O'Neill made the announcement on NBC's "Today Show" and says all of the officers' information will remain confidential.

"New York-Presbyterian's gonna maintain a database, we'll just know the number of people that are going through the program, that are availing themselves of help, and I think it's important. The biggest issue that we're facing, internally and externally there are a number of avenues officers can take, but there is still that stigma," O'Neill said.

Police union president Pat Lynch is praising the move, saying, "The NYPD should continue to focus its efforts on these types of programs, which address our  members’ needs as both cops and human beings."

Law enforcement officers who need services are also encouraged to text "BLUE" to 741741.
