NEW YORK - The New York City Police Department says overall crime is down in the city so far this year.

The latest police numbers released Tuesday show crime dropped 2.6 percent compared to the first nine months last year.

Sixty-seven shootings were recorded last month - the lowest number for any September in history.

Burglaries are also down significantly, and police brass credit neighborhood policing for the drop.

"Since the inception of neighborhood policing in 2015, there has been a 30 percent reduction in burglaries. In other words there are over 3,000 fewer burglary victims since the inception of neighborhood policing in 2015. So, thank you very much," said NYPD Chief of Crime Control Lori Pollock.

Police also say they have seen drops in murder, robbery, grand larceny.

But shootings are up over the same period from last year, and anti-Semitic hate crimes are also up more than 50 percent.
