It is the end of watch for 33-year-old Brian Mulkeen, the NYPD officer who was shot and killed late Saturday night, possibly by his own gun during a struggle with the suspect.

Mulkeen served in the Bronx Borough’s Anti-Crime Unit. NYPD brass say he was a fine officer dedicated to his job, and that he even made a gun arrest Friday night.

He was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center where an emotional tribute took place overnight as several officers lined the hospital driveway.

He was killed in what's being described as a struggle and a shootout. It happened around 12:30 a.m. near the community center at the Edenwald Houses.

There remained an active crime scene investigation this morning.

The stretch of East 229th street is blocked off in front of the complex.

The NYPD says Mulkeen and his partner were in the area investigating gang violence and recent shootings in the area.

Officials say a group officers were attempting to question the suspect when the suspect took off running. A violent struggle then ensued, according to authorities.

Other officers also fired at the suspect at the scene, striking him, according to officials. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A .32-caliber revolver that belonged to the suspect was recovered at the scene, according to officials, though police say it does not appear at this time that that gun was the one that fired.

Police say the suspect was 27-years-old and was on probation for a drug-related arrest. They say he has several prior arrests, including a burglary conviction in Rockland County.

Mulkeen served with the NYPD for six-and-a-half years. Officials say he leaves behind a girlfriend who is also an NYPD officer.

Flags have been ordered to be flown half-staff until further notice.

The mayor, the governor and the NYPD are asking those to send condolences and prayers to the police department as it grieves along with Mulkeen’s parents, sister, and girlfriend.

The New York Police and fire Widows’ and Children’s’ Benefit Fund, also known as Answering the Call, announced it will donate $25,000 to Mulkeen’s family for any immediate expenses following his death.
