Bat Signal and all, New York City was guarded by the Dark Knight on Saturday night for "Batman Day."

DC Comics carried off a celebration of "Batman Day" to mark the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of crimefighter Bruce Wayne and his masked identity.

New York City joined in on the fun. The famous Bat Signal was seen in Brooklyn, shining on the side of the Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg.

In the heart of Gotham, the Empire State building's spire was lit up to honor the Caped Crusader.

And even Police Commissioner James O'Neill got in on the fun, changing his Twitter name to Commissioner Gordon for the night, a reference to Batman's friend and Gotham's longtime police commissioner in the comics.

Fan gatherings happened all over the world. But the most ambitious party plan was the illumination of the bat signal.

It started at Fed Square in Melbourne, Australia. The signal also appeared in 13 other cities, including Tokyo, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, Montreal, Sao Paulo, and Johannesburg.

Los Angeles also celebrated with a fan experience concert and the Batman Inaugural 5K run.
