L train riders have to find a different way to get around this weekend.

Most of the line shut down Friday night so the MTA could install an escalator at the Union Square station. Crews will also make the L, F, and M platform at 14th Street-6th Avenue more accessible.

Service was suspended between 8th Avenue and Broadway Junction at 10:45 p.m. and will be out until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Free shuttle buses are being provided, and the MTA says riders can use the G, J, and M trains as alternatives.

The escalator installation comes as crews are still making repairs to the Canarsie Tube, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

That work has resulted in reduced L train service, with longer waits on nights and weekends, since April, but MTA officials say the escalator work requires a near-total shutdown.

More service interruptions are on the way: the MTA says there will be no L trains on night and weekends at the 8th Avenue and 6th Avenue stops in Manhattan for three to five weeks in October and November so work can be done on elevators at those stations.
