QUEENS, N.Y. - A man was fatally shot by police earlier this morning in Queens after a heated exchange in gunfire.

The fatal accident occurred just after 2 a.m.

Police responded to reports of a male being assaulted outside a bodega near 107th Avenue and Sutphin Blvd.

A 26-year-old man was transported to the hospital after being found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

Police was dispatched to the area of of 156 Street and 110 Avenue where officers spotted someone they believed fit the description of the suspect.

Surveillance video shows the moments before the shooting. 

The suspect shot at police first, and then exchanged gunfire with police. That’s when officers shot the suspect in the head.

The man was pronounced dead after being taken to Jamaica Hospital.

Sources say an ongoing drug dispute was going on near the bodega where the incident occurred.

"When I was sleeping, I hear the noise. Then I get sleepy again. But I didn't know anything. When I come morning outside, then I see there's a lot of cars,” said one neighborhood resident.

“This is the great work that they do each and every day, going into harm’s way and making sure the city stays safe," said Chief Terence Monohan.

Investigators recovered this 9 mm handgun from the scene. The officers involved in the shooting were not injured.
